Sunrise Period for the .Ke Second Level Domain set for July 23 by KeNIC

The Kenya Network Information Centre (KENIC) the entity charged that manages and the administrators of the .Ke Country Code Top-Level Domain (.ke ccTLD) name is announcing the launch of .Ke Second Level Domains.

The second-level domain (SLD) is the portion of the domain name that is located immediately to the left of the dot and domain name extension.

In the case of .Ke domain which is a  country code second-level domain (ccSLD) for Kenya, the domain  ccSLD portion of the domain name is located between the ccTLD and the SLD. Example: The ccSLD in is .co.

The registry shall introduce SLD’s in the following phases:

  • Phase 1: Sunrise period shall be Ninety (90) days from the date of launch;
  • Phase 2: Land rush period shall be Thirty (30) days months from the End of the sunrise period above;
  • Phase 3: Cooling-Off period shall be Thirty (30) days from the end of the sunrise period above;
  • Phase 4: General availability period shall be One Hundred and Fifty (150) days after launch of SLDs

Last year KENIC reduced the prices of the domains under its management to increase the registrations which now amount to over 60, 000 domains.

Despite the introduction of the SLD, the third level domains will still be available for registration.

All companies/ businesses/ institutions/ organizations and individuals are advised to take note of this and make the necessary arrangements through their registrars to secure their second level domains.
